Ray Crooke. (Cairns, Queensland,)
Ray Crooke has lived a truly remarkable life. His paintings are inspired from his time in the South West Pacific, predominately the Thursday Islands & Far North Queensland as well as from Tahiti, Fiji and other Pacific Islands where, in each case he became enchanted with the lifestyle of the people & painted and still paints them in their everyday life.
"He belongs to that rare band of artists who have subtly changed our way of looking at the world. He has revealed the tropical north [of Australia] as it has never been revealed before. We are in his debt to the extent that we now tend to see that part of the country through his eyes and with his vision." ... James Gleeson.
Ray Crooke's paintings are in major public and private collections in Australia, Britain and the United States. He has shown at State Galleries in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, as well at The Australian Art Exhibition in London (Tate Gallery) and at Leicester Gallery.
He won the Archibald Prize in 1978 for his portrait of George Johnson and he is permanently represented in the Australian National Gallery, Canberra and the State Gallery of New South Wales.
This Ray Crooke art print, 'Family Group, Fiji' has been specially created from his most recent painting trip to Fiji in 2004.
Ray is currently painting for a forthcoming exhibition at Philip Bacon Galleries opening 19th November this year. |
